Community Clean-Up in the Smithdown ‘Dales’

November 22, 2011

Thursday 8th September was a day of activity in the L15 ‘Dales’ to improve the environment for all who live there.

Cllr Laura Robertson-Collins organised the day for councillors, residents, student reps, and staff from the City Council and partner organisations to help clean the area.

Laura said “We wanted to ensure the area was looking good as the students move into the area to encourage all residents to treat the area with respect.

This clean-up is the start of a concerted effort to improve ‘the Dales’ neighbourhood where many residents suffer high levels of mess and noise”.

Volunteers and staff cleaned alleys, swept streets, & pulled up weeds. Enforcement Officers checked trade waste agreements in the shops and businesses. Thanks to Tesco Smithdown Road for donating sandwiches and drinks for the helpers.

Since the 8th September clean-up a continuing programme of checking wheelie bins, stencilling addresses on them, and spot-checking alleys for dumping has continued.

Laura and the Greenbank Labour Team have visited all student households in the area as they moved back this autumn to welcome them & ensure students are aware of their responsibilities to the area, have the correct bins and are able to recycle as much waste as possible.
